What is Microneedling Treatment? How Does Microneedling Work?
Microneedling can be defined as a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure done to the skin to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential proteins for maintaining skin elasticity, smoothness, and firmness.
As the name suggests, the procedure uses a device with fine needles that puncture the skin and stimulate the necessary protein production.
Research suggests the procedure helps with multiple skin concerns, including age-related issues like wrinkles and fine lines. While the procedure can be done on many areas of the body, it is commonly done on the face and neck, where signs of ageing are most noticeable¹. What’s more, you need multiple treatment sessions to achieve the best results.
What Does Microneedling Treat? Benefits of Microneedling
As mentioned, the procedure is primarily used to get rid of skin ageing and related issues. You should consider microneedling if you suffer from the following²;
- Enlarged skin pores
- Wrinkles and fine lines (appearance of age spots)
- Loose or creepy skin, thin and/or wrinkled skin.
- Mild appearance of scars, for example, from acne or burns
- Uneven skin tone/skin discolouration
- people
- Other conditions. Microneedling can help people with medical conditions like alopecia areata (hair loss linked to autoimmune disease) and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

Microneedling in Oakville: What to Expect
Our microneedling services at Maple Grove Medical clinic follow a quick three-step process:
Step 1: Before Microneedling
If you contact us for microneedling services, you’ll speak to one of our experienced professional doctors who can take you through the process. Consultation also includes a thorough skin assessment, a review of medical history, discussions about patient goals for the procedure, taking photos, and more.
This is also a great time to ask questions about microneedling, including side effects, how long microneedling takes to show results, whether it hurts or not, the number of microneedling treatments needed, the cost, and more! Step 1 is meant to answer all important questions before a patient can commit to the process.
Step 2: During Microneedling
If you are a suitable candidate for microneedling and you are ready to get the treatment, you can book an appointment. The procedure is safe and painless. We start by cleaning the treatment area and applying a numbing agent (cream/ointment). This ensures a safe and comfortable procedure.
Approximately 30 minutes after applying a numbing cream, we proceed and begin the process. As mentioned, the procedure is done using a special microneedling device (microneedling pen) with tiny adjustable needles.
The length of the tiny needles can be adjusted accordingly to reach different depths; longer needles may be necessary for deeper What. Most importantly, treatment is gentle and slow with precision across the treatment area.
Step 3: After Microneedling
Patients can go home right away and resume normal activities after the procedure while awaiting a natural healing process boosted by increased elastin and collagen production. While the skin can experience some mild swelling or redness, this is usually for a couple of days (a maximum of five days) in many cases.
Other possible after-effects include discomfort and skin irritation. However, these effects subside and are rarely an issue with many patients.
In any case, irritation or discomfort can be controlled by simple remedies like using an ice pack. Redness can also be controlled by avoiding sun damage (direct sunlight) during the healing period and/or wearing makeup. After a week or so, you should have a vibrant, youthful appearance.

What Does Microneedling Feel Like?
Microneedling may feel like a warm and/or scratchy sensation in the treatment area. Some slight discomfort may be experienced when treatment is done near bony areas such as the cheeks. Deep microneedling can also cause some slight bleeding. However, the numbing cream applied makes the process comfortable for most patients.
How Long Will a Microneedling Procedure Take?
A typical microneedling session at Maple Grove Medical Clinic can take 30-60 minutes (sometimes a few hours), depending on factors such as the size of the treatment area.
Who Is Not an Ideal Candidate for Microneedling Treatment?
If you fall into the categories below, microneedling might not be right for you:

- You are undergoing active skin cancer treatment on the area
- You are pregnant/nursing
